This small, breathtakingly beautiful country is a laid-back and peaceful democratic republic (there is no army), without much of an indigenous culture or colonial heritage but exuding a warm, authentic Latin personality.

Costa Rica is a treasure trove for the nature-lover. Separating the lowlands facing the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean is a range of active and dormant volcanoes surrounded by mountain cloud forest, lowland tropical jungle and savannah grasslands. Plantations of its world famous coffee blanket the sunny slopes, while trees laden with orchids are home to quetzals, trogons and hummingbirds.

On the Pacific coast, the jungle creeps down to the shoreline, enlivened by the chattering of monkeys and parrots; the Caribbean shore hosts volcanic beaches and palm-sheltered coves lapped by a turquoise sea.

There is a well-developed, slick and sustainable network of national parks covering much of the national territory and road travel is always scenic. There are many light aircraft services to reach the remoter spots.

Costa Rica highlights…

Waterfall abseiling

Descend a jungle gorge with ropes, dipping in and out of the torrential cascades of waterfalls.

For a truly exhilarating experience in the natural realm of Arenal, our abseiling trip will excite your senses as you weave through the gushing cascades of a series of waterfalls.

Safety is paramount on this descent along a course of fun and exciting abseils, and you’ll be guided by a specialist instructor at every step. The first abseil is the highest – a dizzying 48m vertically hugging the side of a waterfall – and you’ll soon find yourself confident in the technique. As you follow a stream on its course through a rainforest gully, the course leads down rocky drops and often right into the path of waterfalls, ensuring you get a good drenching – and a full submersion in Costa Rica’s natural world.

La Paz Waterfall Gardens

Visit the La Paz Waterfall Gardens and the impressive crater lake at the top of Poas volcano, stopping at a coffee farm along the way.

A desolate expanse of rock rises up on all sides to enclose a surreal, milky turquoise lake at the top of Poas volcano. Within the crater you can often see misty fumaroles of smoke, hinting at the volatile energy that forged this harsh, ruptured landscape.

Driving out of the capital towards Poas, the scenery and climate begin to change as coffee plantations and strawberry farms gradually transform into dense forest. En route, stop at a coffee estate for breakfast and a tour demonstrating the traditional techniques used to produce Costa Rica’s renowned coffee.

We’ll visit the viewing platform at the summit of Poas to look down into the vast bowl of the crater – it’s an incredible panorama and one of Costa Rica’s most famous sights. Next we’ll continue on to the idyllic La Paz Waterfall Gardens for lunch and a guided walk through the forest to reach a waterfall plunging through tropical greenery. There are four more falls within these enchanted gardens, as well as a butterfly observatory, serpentarium, bird house and hummingbird feeders where you can photograph the tiny birds at close range.

See Giant Leatherback Turtles Nesting At Tortuguero

Watch an extraordinary natural event take place on Tortuguero’s beaches as giant leatherback turtles arrive en masse to lay their eggs.

Tortuguero is an important habitat for the famous leatherback turtle, an ocean giant often measuring as much as 2m in length and weighing up to 600kg. These remarkable creatures return to the beach on which they were born to give birth to the next generation between March and June, and if your timing is right you could have the privilege of witnessing this humbling spectacle for yourself.

It is an extremely impressive, even moving sight as hundreds of sea turtles crawl up the beach on flippers little accustomed to land, seeking a safe nesting place for their young. Once the mothers have laid their eggs – usually over 100 per nest – they cover them with sand and return to the ocean.

Over the next few nights, visitors can observe the newborn turtles emerging from the shelter of their eggs and struggling towards the sea. The few that survive will one day come back to this very beach to play their part in the endless natural cycle.
